Scranton is witnessing a surge in community-driven initiatives aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods and fostering connections among residents. These programs not only enhance the city’s aesthetic appeal but also strengthen the social fabric of our community.
Garden of Cedar: A Green Oasis in South Side
Located at 715 Cedar Avenue, the Garden of Cedar stands as a testament to community collaboration. This urban garden offers residents the opportunity to cultivate their own plots, participate in educational workshops, and engage in seasonal events. The garden’s design, featuring ADA-accessible pathways, ensures inclusivity for all community members.
Beautiful Blocks Program: Empowering Homeowners
NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania, in partnership with the City of Scranton, has introduced the Beautiful Blocks program. This initiative provides matching grants of up to $1,000 per property to groups of five or more residents. The funds support exterior home improvements, ranging from landscaping to porch repairs, aiming to enhance neighborhood aesthetics and foster community pride.
NEPA Thrives: Addressing Workforce Challenges
The Scranton Area Community Foundation’s NEPA Thrives initiative focuses on creating equitable workforce solutions. By collaborating with various community partners, NEPA Thrives addresses barriers such as skills training, digital access, and affordable childcare, ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to thrive in the regional economy.
NEPA Moves: Enhancing Transportation Access
Recognizing the link between mobility and opportunity, the NEPA Moves initiative works to improve transportation access across Northeastern Pennsylvania. Through partnerships with transportation providers and community organizations, NEPA Moves aims to develop sustainable solutions that connect residents to employment, education, and essential services.
Scranton City Pride: A Community Beautification Effort
Scranton City Pride is an annual event that brings together volunteers for clean-ups, plantings, and environmental stewardship programs throughout the city. Organized by Scranton Tomorrow, NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania, and United Neighborhood Centers, this initiative encourages residents to take an active role in maintaining and beautifying their neighborhoods.
These initiatives exemplify the power of community engagement in shaping a vibrant and inclusive Scranton. By participating in or supporting these programs, residents contribute to the ongoing transformation and enrichment of our city’s neighborhoods.
