Scranton, Pennsylvania, is embracing its role on the global stage by hosting events that connect international happenings with local community engagement. This summer, the city is set to become a hub for soccer enthusiasts and cultural celebrations alike.
World Cup Fan Zone in Downtown Scranton
As the FIFA World Cup 2026™ captivates audiences worldwide, Scranton is bringing the excitement home with the Pennsylvania World Cup Fan Zone. Scheduled for July 4, 5, 18, and 19 at the Lackawanna County Courthouse Square, this free event offers live broadcasts of the tournament’s knockout rounds and final matches on a massive 13’ x 29’ screen, complemented by four additional 6’ x 9’ screens throughout the square.
Beyond the matches, attendees can enjoy a family-friendly atmosphere featuring soccer-themed activities for all ages. The Onvo Kids Zone will offer inflatable soccer games, an obstacle course, and a slide, while local soccer clubs will host skills and drills clinics. A high-tech LED Soccer Simulator is also planned to enhance the interactive experience.
Live entertainment is set to begin two hours before the first match each day, with performances by bands like Hanson and Tonic. Food trucks and a Michelob Ultra Beer Garden will provide refreshments, ensuring a festive environment for all visitors.
Scranton Mayor Paige G. Cognetti expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “To be selected as an official destination for World Cup fans puts Scranton on a global stage, and it’s something our residents should be proud of.”
World Refugee Day Celebration
In addition to the soccer festivities, Scranton continues its tradition of honoring World Refugee Day. This annual event celebrates the strength and courage of individuals who have been forced to flee their home countries due to conflict or persecution. The community gathers to share cultural songs, music, refreshments, and activities for children, fostering a spirit of unity and understanding.
These events highlight Scranton’s commitment to embracing global cultures and providing platforms for community engagement. By hosting such celebrations, the city not only honors international events but also strengthens its local community bonds.
